Alain Madelin

Alain Madelin is a key figure in the revival of liberal thought in France. He has held numerous mandates (Deputy for Ille-et-Vilaine, Member of the European Parliament, Regional Councillor for Brittany, General Councillor for the canton of Redon, Mayor of Redon) and responsibilities (Minister of Industry, Post and Telecommunications and Tourism, Vice-President of the Union for French Democracy, UDF, Minister of Enterprise and Economic Development, responsible for small and medium-sized enterprises and trade and crafts, Minister of Economy and Finance in the Juppé government, President of Liberal Democracy). He has also been very active in the world of ideas. With Henri Lepage, he founded the Euro 92 Institute in the 1990s, which constituted an invaluable reserve of articles on subjects as varied as currency, the environment, health, and the history of liberal ideas. In 2011, he co-founded the Private Equity fund Latour Capital, which he left in 2019. He remains a keen observer of French political life. Among his many works are: “At the Sources of the French Liberal Model” (1997) and more recently “Liberal but Not Guilty” (2009).
