Second Tree is a humanitarian organisation that works in refugee camps, and trains institutions and civil society on community engagement and trust building. Founded by volunteers working in one of Europe’s worst refugee camps, here is how they define their mission : “We saw the harm caused by humanitarian practices that perceive refugees as victims. These practices reduce people to recipients of aid rather than capable agents, nullifying personal responsibility and defining them as passive entities who need aid but have no duty towards their future. We use what we learn from our community and the communities we support to advocate for an approach to migration that is evidence-based and rooted in individual dignity. Through a network of like-minded humanitarians, decision-makers, and academics, we work to influence policy, improve practices, and encourage a discourse on migration that rejects victimhood.”
