Summer Seminar in Aix-en-Provence 2024

IES-Europe has been organizing “Europe & Liberty” seminars since 1989. In 2024, the Aix-en-Provence seminar in English will bring together around fifteen students who will interact during breaks with another fifteen students who will follow a similar seminar in French. If you wish to follow the seminar in French, switch to the French page of this site.

The purpose of the seminar is to provide a general introduction to classical liberal thought as developed by Locke, Smith, Turgot, Say, Mises, Hayek and many others.

The seminar follows the Socratic tradition: the lectures last no more than 45 minutes and are followed by time for discussion between the speaker and the participants. The debates then continue informally around meals and during free time.

The seminar is free of charge, the organization paying for accommodation and meals. But if some students are in a position to contribute they are invited to do so through the "contribute" tab.

Sanford Ikeda

Sanford Ikeda is an expert on the economy of cities, taking an Austrian School approach to the subject. He is the author of Dynamics of the Mixed Economy: Toward a Theory of Interventionism (London: Routledge, 1997) as well as articles in the Southern Economic Journal, Journal of Economics and Humane Studies, American Journal of Economics & Sociology, Cosmos + Taxis, the Review of Austrian Economics, and the Independent Review, Forbes, and others.

Łukasz Dominiak is an Associate Professor at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Poland. He holds a PhD and habilitation in political philosophy and is a Fellow of the Mises Institute. His research and interests are in libertarian legal theory.

His general topics of interest gravitate around the institutional factors of development, with emphasis on regulations, monetary and fiscal policies.

Christian Năsulea

Professor of Economics

University of Bucharest

Christian Năsulea teaches Economics at the Department of International Relations and Universal History at the Faculty of History of the University of Bucharest. He is the Executive Director of the Institute for Economic Studies - Europe and a fellow of the Institute for Research in Economic and Fiscal Issues. His areas of research interest include public policy and stimuli for economic development, political and commercial negotiation in international relations, behavioural economics and decision processes.

Pierre Garello

Professor of Economics

President of IES-Europe and Editor-in-Chief of both the Journal des Économistes et des Études Humaines and Journal des Libertés, Pierre Garello is Professor of Economics at the Faculté d’Economie et Gestion of Aix Marseille University in France. He has published various articles on Austrian economics, law and economics (especially competition law and contract law). He is the editor-in-chief of the Journal des Économistes et des Études Humaines, a scholarly review dealing with economic, legal, philosophical and political issues, in the tradition of the French Classical Liberal School.
